Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Teachers now available in Myanmar Language

UNESCO Myanmar office has published the translation of the publication “Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Teachers”. This publication is an important resource to promote Media and Information Literacy (MIL) among young people at a crucial time in Myanmar’s transition to democracy. The expansion of traditional mass media, the rapid adoption of the internet and mobile technologies in Myanmar, and their growing number of users, especially among the youth, pose both an opportunity for participation in the democratic discourse and engagement in the peace process. However, these changes also bring some challenges such as exclusivity in the peace process (with mainstream groups dominating the peace narrative) and the proliferation of hate speech.

In this context, a multi-stakeholder approach is needed to promote MIL in Myanmar especially among young people as a potent tool for peace education, peacebuilding, and conflict transformation.

The curriculum is specifically designed with teachers in mind and for integration into the formal teacher education system, but it is also a useful resource for actors that work with youth on topics such as freedom of expression, intercultural dialogue, civic engagement and cultural diversity. 

The translation and publication of the Curriculum in Myanmar Language is part of UNESCO Myanmar’s efforts to promote MIL, build the capacities of young people, build trust in the media and contribute to the ongoing peace-building initiatives in the country. 

The Myanmar translation of the Curriculum has been possible thanks to the support of the Kingdom of Sweden.
