Integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Teacher Education in South-East Asia

Project Review Workshop

24-26 April 2018

Holiday Inn Sukhumvit, Bangkok, Thailand

In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Sustainable Development Goals for all the countries to achieve by 2030 in order to transform the world for sustainable futures. To facilitate the transition of the planet and the global society to a sustainable world, SDGs demand that by 2030, “all learners acquire knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development…” (SDG 4 Target 7) and that “people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development” (SDG 12 Target 8).

Teachers are powerful agents of change, and one of the most critical facilitators of learning for sustainable development. Teachers can be an effective lever to reorient society towards sustainability. In this context, the Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) made the capacity-building of teachers and educators in ESD integration one of the priority areas that international community should focus its action on.

Responding to this call for action made by GAP on ESD, UNESCO Bangkok, in cooperation with SEAMEO and with the generous support of the Government of Japan, initiated the project Sustainability Begins with Teachers in South-East Asia. The project aims at empowering teacher education institutions and universities in the sub-region to generate and engage in change actions to integrate ESD in teacher education. In total, 26 institutions took part in the project process in South-East Asia.

In order to facilitate the exchange and review of the project experiences, UNESCO Bangkok will bring together the representatives of the teacher education institutions and universities that took part in the project at the project review workshop “Sustainability Begins with Teachers – Integrating Education for Sustainable Development in Teacher Education in South-East Asia”, which will be held from 24 to 26 April 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand. The participants will join from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Philippines and Thailand.
