Expert Symposium for Sustainable Lifelong Learning Cities in Asia Pacific

- Lifelong Learning and Unemployed Youth in Cities -

Changwon, Republic of Korea, 10 June, 2013

On 10 June 2013, the Expert Symposium for Sustainable Lifelong Learning Cities in Asia Pacific was held at the newly built city icon “Marine Solar Tower” in Changwon City, Republic of Korea.

The symposium was a collaborative effort between Changwon City, the Korean National Commission for UNESCO (KNCU) and UNESCO Bangkok.

Mr. Wan-Su Park, Mayor of Changwon City, Mr.  Dong-Seok Min, Secretary General of KNCU, and Mr. Gwang-Jo Kim, the Regional Director, UNESCO Bangkok Office inaugurated the symposium.  Eight international and national experts made presentations on lifelong learning, economic growth without creating jobs, unemployed youth, employability, job prospects, motivation, learning for life, sustainability, learning cities, and innovative methodologies.  The symposium hosted 130 participants who took part in discussions on these topics.

In her key note speech, Dr. Eun Kyung Park suggested for a human centered society and changing the definition of work, in view of the issues the world faces today, including environmental changes, economic growth in the midst of skyrocketing unemployment rates,super-connected generations, aging society, extreme urbanization, and widening socio-economic gaps. Dr. Park reiterated the importance of education for sustainable development.

The symposium comes as part of the MOU signed by the three organizations in October 2012. The results of the event demonstrate the success of this collaboration which will contribute to the discourse and practices of Sustainable Lifelong Learning in Cities in the global arena.
