Education for Migrant, Stateless and Ethnic Minority (Thailand and Myanmar) Bridging education systems of Thailand and Myanmar for disadvantaged migrant children
Following the two consultation meetings on education for Myanmar migrant children in Thailand in 2014 and 2015, UNESCO Bangkok, UNICEF Thailand and NGO partners continue to raise issue of education across borders to the Ministry of Education of Myanmar and Thailand. Due to lack of recognition and accreditation of education provided at the NGO based migrant learning centres (MLCs) by the governments, many of these children have been facing challenges in transition and access to accredited education in Thailand and Myanmar. UNESCO together with its partners is committed to ensure that the bilateral Joint Working Group (JWG) is established to maintain a regular coordination between both governments. The 1st JWG meeting is expected to be held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar to discuss on a collaboration between the Ministries of Education of both countries around equivalency frameworks and potential agreement, as well as clear policies on recognition of education of migrant children in Thailand by the Myanmar Ministry of Education.
