Announcement: Applicants selected to join the first Luang Prabang Youth Ambassadors’ Forum

20 August – 15 October 2022, via online and in Luang Prabang

UNESCO with partners United Nations University (UNU), Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech), International Training Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (CRIHAP), Traditional Arts and Enthnology Centre (TAEC), the Luang Prabang World Heritage Office, and the Laung Prabang Department of Information, Culture and Tourism are pleased to announced that 29 Luang Prabang youth have been selected to join the inaugural Luang Prabang Youth Ambassadors’ Forum, this year’s programme of which is ‘Building Community-centered Innovations to Promote Sustainable Development and Safeguard Intangible Cultural Heritage’.

Youth between 15 to 30 years old will participate in a hybrid learning modality, in which lectures and discussions will be conducted online via a video conference platform of UNESCO, while fieldwork activities will be carried out in their local communities that currently practice various kinds of conservation of intangible cultural heritage.

At this innovative forum, Lao youth will work alongside international and national experts in cultural heritage and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to explore and document living heritage in their immediate communities. They will attend several practical classes, such as design thinking, documentation and video editing, community-based inventorying of intangible heritage, as well as participate in discussions on various threats to their cultures and controversial practices surrounding the preservation of cultural heritage of local communities.

SPECIAL ONLY AT THIS FORUM: If you are interested in observing the forum (conducted in English and Lao with simultaneous interpretation provided), you are welcome to register as an ‘observer’ via this link: https://bit.ly/LPyouth-Observer.

Observers will not be expected to conduct fieldwork or submit assignments in regard to any forum activities. They can audit online classes to listen to lectures and discussions; they will not be awarded any certificate of participation. There is no age limit for observers.

The tentative schedule of the forum can be found at: https://bit.ly/LPyouth-agenda
