South-East Asia Subregional Workshop on Education for Sustainable Development for Teacher Education Institutions

Jointly organized by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) and UNESCO Bangkok, the Subregional Workshop on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) for Teacher Education Institutions, 5-9 June 2017, Chiang Rai, Thailand, will bring together teacher educators from ten universities in six countries in South-East Asia - Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam – to examine and explore approaches to integrate ESD in teacher education.

The event is taking place as a part of the Japanese Funds-in-Trust project “Today for Tomorrow: Coordinating and Implementing the Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development”, focusing on the GAP Priority Action Area 3 – Building capacities of educators and trainers. It also responds to the Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education, in particular Target 4.7 which aims to ensure that by 2030, “all learners acquire knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development” and Target 4.c, to “substantially increase the supply of qualified teachers”.

Given the sufficient amount of modules and tools on ESD integration developed over the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), the workshop will focus on developing the capacity of teacher education institutions (TEIs) not only to understand a range of ESD integration options and opportunities but also to identify challenges and factors for success within the respective TEIs. The programme includes a study visit to Bansankong School, a primary school in Chiang Rai Province, known for its successful ESD implementation.
