Chulalongkorn University-UNESCO International Conference on Social and Sustainability Science ASEAN 2018

Chulalongkorn University-UNESCO International Conference on Social and Sustainability Science ASEAN 2018

When: 23-25 January
Where: Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok

Global agricultural systems are expanding rapidly in response to the increasing demands of dynamic regions such as Asia-Pacific.

The impact of that expansion on this planet and its people could be disastrous, with environmental challenges related to agricultural systems including agrochemical pollution, biodiversity loss, climate change, deforestation, drinking water contamination, drought, soil loss, and more. There is an immediate need to strengthen ties between science, research and policy to inform current practices and give rise to positive trends in the future. Education has a crucial role to play in making that happen.

UNESCO Bangkok will participate in a regional conference and policy dialogue organized by Chulalongkorn University in collaboration with Thailand’s Office of the Higher Education Commission focused on these pressing challenges.

The three-day conference will aim to contribute to the ASEAN Work Plan on Education (AWPE), 2016-2020.

A key focus of the conference will be how multidisciplinary social and sustainability sciences and education for sustainable agriculture or research can provide a solid scientific foundation for the greening of agri-food systems.

Delegates will also take a critical look at past and possible future trends in agriculture education, research and extension. The conference report will summarize expert recommendations on this theme, which could be used to help design new projects and guide future government education planning investments in the ASEAN region.

The conference will bring together a unique mix of government officials, research organizations, think tanks and educators, who will join farmer groups, NGOs, as well as representatives from regional and UN agencies. Recommendations to strengthen or reform social and sustainability sciences and agri-food systems education will be produced at the conclusion of the conference.
